MOM! Q&A with Stephanie Revill from MODERN CLOTH NAPPIES

- 3 min read

In this Q&A we are delighted to be chatting with Stephanie Revill, owner and founder of Modern Cloth Nappies.

I came across MCN on Instagram and just loved the prints and colours on offer. Like MOM!, they are sustainable and functional, but also look beautiful and compliment babies outfits.

When I first started to use cloth nappies with Martha I found it a compete minefield. If you have considered using cloth nappies but are unsure where to start, then keep reading...

How did Modern Cloth Nappies come about?

Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN) was founded in 2019 after the birth of my daughter. The idea emerged from my own experiences and challenges. I had been diagnosed with postnatal depression (PND) and anxiety following the birth of my son in 2016. These feelings persisted into my next pregnancy, heightening my anxiety about day-to-day life and making me more conscious of my environmental impact. This awareness inspired me to create a solution that was not only better for my children but also for the planet. Thus, MCN was born, driven by a desire to offer a sustainable and gentle alternative for other parents navigating similar journeys!

What are your top 5 tips for getting started with cloth nappies?

Starting with cloth nappies can seem daunting and we’re on a mission to change that; it’s quite manageable with a few helpful tips

  1. Start small – You can always begin with a few nappies to try out before investing in a full set.
  2. Choose the right style – We offer various types of cloth nappies, like all-in-ones, fitted nappies, and pre-folds. Experiment to see which style suits your baby and your lifestyle best. Our Pearl Pocket all-in-one nappy is our best seller!
  3. Establish a routine – Set up a routine for washing and storing used nappies. A consistent routine will make cloth nappies as convenient as using disposables.
  4. Join us for support! – Reach out to us, join our facebook group, local groups/nappy libraries, or social media communities where you can get advice and share experiences with other parents using cloth nappies!
  5. Be patient – Every baby is different, and you may not get it perfect first try! Don’t hesitate to tweak things as you go along.

Why are cloth nappies more sustainable?

Cloth nappies are more sustainable than disposable ones primarily because they are reusable, significantly reducing waste that ends up in landfills. Disposables are often made with plastics and can take up to 500 years to decompose. Cloth nappies, on the other hand, can be washed and reused multiple times. Moreover, they require fewer raw materials per use and result in a lower overall carbon footprint when washed in full loads and line-dried. By choosing cloth, parents contribute to a significant reduction in the environmental impact associated with disposable nappies!

I struggled a bit with sizing and fit when I first started using cloth nappies with Martha. What advice do you have in getting the perfect fit?

Getting the right fit with cloth nappies (or any nappy for that matter!) is crucial to prevent leaks and ensure your baby is comfortable so my top tips are as follows:

  • Adjust the snaps – Our cloth nappies come with adjustable snaps/buttons/poppers (many names!), so you can adjust the fit as your baby grows. Make sure the nappy is snug around the waist and legs but not too tight. Experiment with these settings to find the best fit as your baby grows to bring the length up and down and the waist in and out.
  • Insert MUST be flat – Make sure any inserts or liners are laid out flat and cover the necessary areas to absorb efficiently. This will also affect the fit If they are ‘bunched’ up.
  • Check fit guides – Other brands may offer other advice, but we have our own for our nappies. And if you are still having a little trouble, join our social media groups where experienced cloth nappy users are always more than happy to help!
